Municipal Directions

Mandate

The purpose of this committee is to examine community and municipal issues from the perspective of Calgary’s business/corporate community and provide the Chamber with:

  • Leading advice and perspectives - provides advice and ideas on how the Chamber can support and influence Calgary’s development as a place in which businesses can grow and prosper and how community needs can be met.
  • An evaluation framework for issues - develops and maintains a strategic framework to review and analyze community and municipal issues.
  • Long-term community vision - contributes advice and ideas to position the Chamber as a balanced, forward-looking and community-focused opinion leader.

To accomplish this, this committee will also provide a networking and collaboration platform to discuss and collaborate about both emerging and long-term municipal and community issues and initiatives.

Committee Focus Areas

This committee looks at high-level issues, opportunities and strategies. Other Chamber committees focus on specific industries and business interests such as health, environment, human resources, natural resources, transportation, aboriginal issues, tax and economic affairs, and the arts.

This committee focuses on broad community and municipal issues outside of those areas, in particular:

  • Municipal governance policies, budgets, and programs (may include jurisdictions such as the Province).
  • Fundamental issues such as communication, fairness, transparency and accountability.
  • Vision, growth and development plans.
  • Opportunities to build capacity and collaboration within the business, corporate and other communities to address community and municipal challenges.
  • Addressing barriers to the development of a better and stronger community – eg. silos, institutional or organizational competition, partisanship, social conditions, etc.
